Top 100 Drone Defense Companies in 2025

In an era where unmanned systems define the next frontier of warfare and intelligence, The Defense Post is unveiling its definitive list of the Top 100 Companies Advancing Drone Technology across air, ground, and sea.

67. Urban Aeronautics – Israel

Urban Aeronautics, an Israeli company, is a pioneer in the development of unique Fancraft™ technology, which underpins its innovative vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Unlike traditional helicopters or winged aircraft, Urban Aeronautics’ designs feature internal, ducted rotors, providing inherent safety benefits by eliminating exposed blades, reducing noise, and allowing for operation in confined and complex environments.

While the firm is also working on manned eVTOL aircraft for urban air mobility (like the CityHawk), its core expertise in ducted fan technology has been significantly applied to unmanned systems, particularly for military and emergency response roles.

For defense applications, Urban Aeronautics’ most notable drone-related product is the Cormorant (formerly AirMule), developed by its subsidiary Tactical Robotics Ltd.

The Cormorant is a fully autonomous, unmanned VTOL aircraft designed for tactical combat logistics and casualty evacuation. It can transport significant payloads (up to 500 kilograms/1,100 pounds) over distances of 50 kilometers (31 miles), enabling resupply to frontline troops or rapid evacuation of injured personnel from dangerous areas inaccessible to traditional aircraft.

The Cormorant’s enclosed rotor design allows it to operate safely in urban canyons, dense forests, or challenging battlefield conditions, including dusty environments and in close proximity to obstacles, with a reduced acoustic and radar signature.

It features advanced flight control systems, redundant systems for safety, and comprehensive navigation and sensor suites for autonomous missions.

Urban Aeronautics has actively sought partnerships with major defense entities, including the US Department of Defense, to further develop and integrate their Fancraft™ technology for military applications.
