Top 100 Drone Defense Companies in 2025

In an era where unmanned systems define the next frontier of warfare and intelligence, The Defense Post is unveiling its definitive list of the Top 100 Companies Advancing Drone Technology across air, ground, and sea.

49. Aerovel – United States

Aerovel is an American company that has gained prominence in the unmanned aerial systems industry, particularly for its long-endurance, vertical takeoff and landing drone technology.

Founded by Dr. Tad McGeer, who also co-founded Insitu (makers of the ScanEagle), Aerovel focuses on developing highly efficient and reliable robotic aircraft for challenging missions.

In early 2024, Aerovel was acquired by Airbus Helicopters, a move that significantly strengthens Airbus’ portfolio in the tactical unmanned solutions market.

Aerovel’s flagship product for defense and security is the Flexrotor. This small tactical VTOL UAS is designed for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance missions, offering impressive endurance of over 12 to 14 hours and the ability to operate from very small footprints, both on land and at sea.

The Flexrotor can carry various payloads, including electro-optical and advanced sensors, and has been tested and deployed with support from the US Department of Defense in harsh, high-threat, and GPS-denied environments, particularly in maritime security exercises.

Its combination of a helicopter’s flexibility and a fixed-wing aircraft’s efficiency makes it a versatile tool for expeditionary operations.
