Embraer, Colombia’s CIAC to Expand Aerospace Cooperation

Brazil’s Embraer and the Colombian Aeronautical Industry Corporation (CAIC) have signed an agreement to broaden industrial cooperation, with a focus on strengthening Colombia’s domestic aerospace sector.

The deal establishes a framework for potential collaboration across manufacturing, maintenance, and technical development.

It also opens the possibility of integrating CIAC into Embraer’s global supply chain, particularly in military aviation programs.

Platforms that could be involved include the A-29 Super Tucano light attack and training aircraft and the KC-390 Millennium tactical transport.

Beyond specific platforms, the partnership is centered on capability development.

Both sides are expected to explore knowledge transfer, workforce training, and the expansion of local technical expertise, with the aim of reinforcing Colombia’s role as a regional hub for aerospace maintenance and production.

Colombia Expands Defense Capabilities

Colombia continues to position itself as a growing defense and aerospace market, with parallel developments in procurement and domestic industrial capacity.

Embraer maintains a strong presence  in the country, with around 50 aircraft in service across defense, commercial, and executive segments, including A-29 Super Tucanos operated by the Colombian Air Force.

At the same time, Bogotá is advancing local industrial capacity.

State-owned shipbuilder COTECMAR recently delivered the offshore patrol vessel ARC 24 de Julio to the navy, marking the introduction of the largest and most complex warship designed and built domestically.

On the airpower side, Colombia has also moved forward with a major procurement decision, agreeing to acquire 17 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden’s Saab in a deal worth approximately $4.3 billion.
