Embraer Tests KC-390 in Swedish Sub-Arctic Conditions

Embraer has completed a cold-weather evaluation campaign for the KC-390 Millennium at the Vidsel Test Range in Sweden, a military test area used for operations in sub-Arctic conditions.

The trials focused on aircraft performance in low temperatures and austere environments.

Flight crews conducted rapid engine start procedures and executed short takeoffs and landings on snow-affected surfaces, assessing responsiveness and handling under winter conditions.

Moreover, the campaign also included ground operations relevant to tactical airlift.

During the event, the aircraft demonstrated the ability to load and unload heavy platforms, including SISU GTT all-terrain military vehicles, while maintaining capacity for personnel and additional cargo.

“The KC-390 Millennium demonstrated once again its versatility and its ability to successfully perform the most demanding missions under the toughest conditions, all with 100 percent reliability,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO at Embraer Defense & Security.

“This next-generation aircraft, which is fully compatible with the Agile Combat Employment concept, represents an unbeatable combination for operations in Northern Europe and the Arctic.”

The KC-390 is a twin-engine, medium-weight transport aircraft designed for multi-role missions, including cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, and aerial refueling.

It measures approximately 35 meters (115 feet) in length, with a wingspan of 35 meters (115 feet) and an overall height of 11.8 meters (38 feet).

It can carry concentrated payloads of up to 26,000 kilograms (57,320 pounds) while maintaining consistent performance across a range of operating conditions.

It can reach a maximum cruise speed of around 470 knots (870 kilometers/541 miles per hour) and operate at altitudes of up to 36,000 feet (10,970 meters).
