SWEBAL Raises $35M to Complete Sweden’s First TNT Plant
Sweden Ballistics (SWEBAL) has raised 30 million euros ($35 million) to complete the construction of a TNT plant in Sweden, strengthening NATO resilience.
The funding from several investors, including former Swedish Army Chief Major General Karl Engelbrektson, will go towards completing the manufacturing facility in Nora, Sweden.
It will also be used to strengthen the domestic supply chain, reducing dependence on imports from other countries and avoiding risks from long-distance shipping delays.
Company co-founder and CEO Joakim Sjöblom noted that the facility aims to address Europe’s problem of “a critical shortage of energetic materials since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, constraining ammunition output.”
TNT Plant
Set to become Sweden’s first TNT production facility since the 1990s, the Nora-based plant is targeting full-scale annual production of over 4,500 metric tons (8,818,490 pounds) of NATO-standard TNT by 2028.
Operating 24/7 using European raw materials and machinery, the factory will supply “the explosives European manufacturers need to sustain rapidly expanding artillery shell production, drone munitions, mines, and other crucial armaments,” Sjöblom said.
Founded in 2024, SWEBAL received a 3-million-euro ($3.45 million) investment in early 2025 to fast-track the facility’s construction.
It is backed by Major General Engelbrektson, e-commerce entrepreneur Pär Svärdson, and EQT founding member and former CEO Thomas von Koch.
The company secured environmental permits from Sweden’s Land and Environmental Court in December 2025, followed by an approved development plan in January 2026.
Sweden is joined by other European players in scaling domestic ammunition production.
Finland announced plans in early 2025 to build a new TNT factory, while Poland’s Nitro-Chem — Europe’s current key TNT supplier — is gearing up to boost annual output of 155mm artillery shells sixfold by 2027.
