Rheinmetall and Indra have signed a strategic pact aimed at securing a multibillion-euro Spanish Army truck program and expanding joint defense production across Europe.
The German and Spanish firms agreed to deepen cooperation through a memorandum of understanding that centers on military vehicle systems, with plans to set up a joint venture later this year.
They are expected to bid for a Spanish procurement covering up to 3,000 military trucks, alongside additional tactical vehicles.
Beyond trucks, the partnership covers a wider range of programs, including modernization of tracked armored vehicles and potential work on infantry fighting vehicle solutions. The companies also signaled interest in collaborating on logistics platforms and forming consortia for future opportunities.
Work will not be limited to land systems. The agreement extends into areas such as space-based communications and other defense technologies, reflecting a broader push to integrate capabilities across platforms.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said that the partnership is “sending a clear signal for deeper European cooperation in the defense sector between Germany and Spain.”
Major European Defense Partnerships
European defense firms have increasingly turned to partnerships to secure large contracts and expand industrial capacity.
In July 2025, Germany’s KNDS Deutschland and Rheinmetall launched the Main Armoured Tank of Europe project with 51 organizations from 12 European countries to develop Europe’s next‑generation main battle tank concept under a European Defence Fund grant.
By October 2025, Rheinmetall and Poland’s state‑owned Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa agreed to create the European Support Vehicles Center joint venture to produce armored recovery, mine‑clearing, and bridge‑laying vehicles for European forces.
Indra and Italy’s ELT Group signed a strategic framework in February 2026 to co‑develop multi‑domain defense technologies, including electronic warfare, radar, and uncrewed systems.
In the same month, KNDS and counter‑drone specialist TYTAN Technologies expanded cooperation on mobile counter‑unmanned aerial system solutions for German land platforms.
