Indra to Lead Two Projects in Latest $819M European Defence Fund Round

Spanish defense firm Indra will take part in 15 projects funded under the European Defence Fund (EDF), including leading two programs, following the European Commission’s latest funding round.

The company is among the most active participants selected in this cycle, with the projects representing a combined value of around 799 million euros ($819 million), though this reflects total program budgets rather than Indra’s share.

Focus on Radar and Cyber Defense

Indra will lead two efforts spanning radar and cyber defense.

One project, SHIMBAD, focuses on developing a next-generation multiband radar system for future European naval platforms.

The second, ECC2, aims to strengthen cyber defense capabilities, including operational coordination and command-and-control systems.

Beyond these, the company is involved in several multinational initiatives across domains, including work on “combat cloud” architectures — digital networks designed to connect military assets across air, land, and maritime environments.

Indra is also continuing its participation in the FAMOUS3 program, which focuses on land systems and platform integration.

European Defence Fund

Launched in 2021, the EDF is the EU’s primary instrument for funding collaborative defense research and capability development.

It is designed to strengthen the bloc’s industrial base, reduce fragmentation, and promote joint procurement and innovation across the bloc.

Programs funded under the EDF typically involve multiple companies and countries and are often seen as stepping stones toward future joint procurement efforts.

Indra has participated in more than 90 EU-supported defense research and development initiatives to date, including precursor programs to the EDF.
