Sweden Acquires Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4 Ground Radar

Sweden has selected Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4 ground-based radar system to strengthen its long-range detection capabilities.

Deliveries to the Swedish Air Force are expected in 2027.

The TPY-4 is a phased-array radar system designed for air surveillance, providing real-time detection and tracking of airborne targets to support situational awareness.

“The TPY-4 radar represents a significant leap forward in integrated deterrence, enhancing interoperability with NATO allies,” said Rick Cordaro, vice president of Radar and Sensor Systems at Lockheed Martin.

The system will “help address the complex and evolving threats faced by America and its allies,” he added.

Features

The TPY-4 radar is designed to operate in environments with high clutter and electronic jamming.

It features Active Electronically Scanned Array technology and has a scalable architecture to support future mission requirements.

The radar supports early warning against tactical ballistic missiles and can scan up to 90 degrees in elevation.

It uses Gallium Nitride-based transmitters and advanced signal processing technology to increase reliability and efficiency.

Available in both fixed and mobile variants, the system can be transported by C-130 or C-17 aircraft, truck, or helicopter, enabling flexible deployment.

Latest Contracts

Sweden is the third country to procure the fifth-generation TPY-4 radar.

In April, the US Air Force received its first TPY-4 system from Lockheed Martin following the successful completion of initial testing.

Norway is the second customer of the TPY-4 radar, having added three more units to its order in September 2024, following an initial purchase of eight systems in 2022.
