Embraer Upgrades SABER M60 Radar Systems for Brazilian Army

Embraer has completed the upgrade of two SABER M60 radar systems operated by the Brazilian Army to the 2.0 configuration, as part of an ongoing program to modernize in-service equipment.

The contract covers eight units and is intended to extend service life while maintaining air defense capabilities.

It follows a mid-life modernization approach, upgrading in-service radars with updated technical standards to improve reliability, availability, and overall performance, while ensuring consistency across the fleet.

The upgraded units have already entered operational use, with the remaining systems expected to follow under the same framework.

Embraer’s system upgrade builds on earlier deliveries, including two SABER M60 systems provided to Brasília in 2022.

Technical Updates and System Role

The SABER M60 is a 3D low-altitude surveillance and fire-control radar with a range of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) and the capacity to track up to 60 targets simultaneously.

It supports the protection of sensitive sites and infrastructure as part of the Brazilian Army’s short-range air defense network.

The 2.0 version introduces both hardware and software updates.

On the software side, improvements focus on signal processing, with revised algorithms to enhance detection and tracking performance, particularly in environments affected by electronic interference.

The system’s operational interface has also been updated to simplify use during intensive or fast-paced operations.

Designed to operate within layered air defense architectures, the radar can be integrated with missile- and gun-based systems.

It also incorporates Low Probability of Interception features, reducing its detectability by adversary sensors.
