Saab has invested $10 million in Pythom, a space technology company specializing in lightweight, rapidly deployable rockets, with operations in Sweden and the US.
The investment aims to accelerate Pythom’s development and deployment of its launch systems.
Saab emphasized that its funding is intended to address gaps in space capabilities, promote innovation in areas relevant to Sweden’s national security, and strengthen the country’s space infrastructure.
The announcement comes months after Pythom announced progress on the development of its first rocket, named “Birka,” at its newly launched rocket manufacturing facility, Nacka Space Beach, located near Stockholm.
The facility is designed to produce compact rockets with minimal infrastructure, aiming to meet the growing demand for local space launches.
Saab’s Latest Projects
Saab is advancing its efforts in various defense projects, collaborating with both Swedish and international partners.
Earlier this month, the company joined Boeing and BAE Systems to offer a next-generation pilot training system for the UK’s Royal Air Force personnel.
In October, Saab received a contract from the Swedish government for the final production phase of two Blekinge-class submarines.
The contract, valued at approximately 9.6 billion Swedish kronor ($1 billion), covers materials and services, with most deliveries scheduled between next year and 2032.
In the space domain, Saab partnered with Maxar Intelligence in June to develop next-generation multi-domain battlespace solutions focused on space-based drone capabilities.
The agreement integrates Maxar’s satellite imagery and 3D terrain data with Saab’s defense systems, enhancing the effectiveness of autonomous platforms in contested environments by providing precise navigation and targeting without relying on GPS.
