US Army Orders Over 200 Humvees in $50M Deal With AM General

AM General has secured a $50.9-million contract modification to produce more than 200 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs or Humvees) for the US Army.

The modification covers an additional 112 each of M1152A1B2 and M1165A1B3 Humvee variants, bringing the total value of the initiative’s prime contract to $3.1 billion.

The company will facilitate associated tasks under the agreement until 2027.

Earlier in September, the Pentagon announced a separate $13.1-million modification to the same contract for M1152 Humvee variants intended for Lebanon under a foreign military sales project.

Work on that order is expected by September 30, 2026.

These awards follow a $126.5-million order in July for M1165A1B3 vehicles. The Pentagon did not disclose the quantity of that order, but the new vehicles will add to the roughly 120,000 Humvees already in the army’s inventory.

The Humvee

Launched in the 1980s, AM General’s Humvee has been continuously upgraded to meet evolving battlefield demands. The 4×4 vehicle can accommodate up to six personnel and reach a length of 15 feet (5 meters), depending on configuration.

The platform can be reinforced with a range of weapons for combat, including a 40-millimeter grenade launcher, a .50-caliber heavy machine gun, a 7.62-millimeter infantry support weapon, a 5.56-millimeter close-range gun, and an anti-tank missile launcher.

Powered by a 190-horsepower Detroit Diesel V8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission, the Humvee can travel up to 350 miles (563 kilometers) and reach speeds exceeding 70 miles (113 kilometers) per hour.
