BlackSky Secures $30M Space-Based ISR Subscription Deal
BlackSky Technology has secured a nearly $30-million, one-year contract from an international defense customer for space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) services.
The agreement marks a rapid expansion of an earlier trial arrangement, with the unnamed customer moving from a limited early-access program to a full subscription in under six months.
The transition followed a series of operational evaluations aimed at testing the system’s integration and performance in real-world conditions.
The contract is tied to BlackSky’s “Assured” service model, which provides prioritized satellite tasking, guaranteed data collection, and accelerated delivery timelines.
The offering is geared toward military and intelligence missions requiring rapid, recurring imagery collection.
Expansion of Gen-3 Satellite Capabilities
The award comes as the company expands its next-generation satellite constellation.
BlackSky recently reached general availability for its Gen-3 imaging services after deploying a fourth satellite into orbit earlier this year.
According to the company, the satellites can produce imagery with a resolution of approximately 35 centimeters (14 inches), allowing for detailed observation of ground activity.
“With four Gen-3s on orbit, BlackSky is seeing growing momentum and rapid adoption of Gen-3 services,” said CEO Brian O’Toole.
The company said the customer required low-latency ISR capabilities that could be integrated into daily missions.
BlackSky’s Spectra platform allows users to task satellites and access daytime, nighttime, and multi-image datasets for analysis.
The system also incorporates automated analytics tools designed to identify objects such as vehicles, aircraft, and vessels.
“With latency as an operational priority, our customer required a true tactical ISR framework capable of matching the sophistication and speed of their day-to-day mission,” O’Toole added.
“Assured delivers reliable, secure and dedicated access to advanced Gen-3 capabilities exactly where and when it matters most.”
BlackSky operates a low Earth orbit satellite constellation and provides data through a subscription-based model.
The company has increasingly focused on high-frequency monitoring and near real-time intelligence delivery as defense customers seek faster access to tactical ISR data.
