BlackSky Secures $25M Deal for Satellite Imagery, Analytics Services

BlackSky Technology has secured a $25-million multi-year contract with an undisclosed international defense customer for satellite imagery and analytics services.

The agreement provides guaranteed access to high-resolution imagery from BlackSky’s latest-generation satellites, combined with AI-based analysis tools.

It is intended to support multiple operational branches, including maritime domain awareness.

Structured as a subscription, the contract includes BlackSky’s Assured service, which provides priority tasking and guaranteed access to satellite capacity over designated areas of interest.

This allows the customer to request imagery on demand and receive data with reduced latency.

The service also relies on BlackSky’s Spectra platform, an AI-driven analytics system that processes satellite imagery to identify, classify, and track objects of interest, such as vehicles, vessels, and aircraft, in near real time.

Delivery will be supported by the Gen-3 satellite constellation, currently consisting of four satellites in orbit, capable of producing imagery with a resolution of about 35 centimeters (13.8 inches).

The agreement follows an initial testing phase under an early access arrangement, after which the customer transitioned to a longer-term contract.

Next-Gen Satellite Capabilities

Recent contract awards highlight expanding demand for commercial satellite imaging and analytics in defense applications, as governments look to scale space-based intelligence capabilities.

In March, the US Air Force Research Laboratory awarded BlackSky a contract to develop and test a large-aperture optical imaging system for future space-based intelligence missions.

The project involves building a low-cost prototype designed to deliver high-precision imagery.

Earlier this year, BlackSky secured multiple contracts to provide Gen-3 Assured satellite services to a new international defense customer, expanding its presence in overseas markets.

These agreements build on an initial early access phase, indicating a transition toward longer-term use of satellite-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities in operational contexts.
