Canadian Armed Forces Records Highest Intake in Over 30 Years
The Canadian Armed Forces has recorded its highest intake in over three decades, enrolling 7,310 personnel in the last fiscal year, exceeding the 6,957 target and meeting its Regular Force recruiting goal for the second consecutive year.
Women accounted for 17 percent of new recruits, while 1,400 permanent residents were enrolled, the highest level since 2022.
This year, the military has raised its recruitment target to 8,200 personnel, reflecting a planned expansion of its force levels.
Intake levels are being adjusted alongside training and integration capacity to manage higher volumes.
Digital Recruitment Systems
To support increased recruitment, the Canadian Armed Forces is introducing new digital systems to streamline application and onboarding processes.
A Digital Onboarding System will shift administrative tasks earlier in the recruitment pipeline, allowing candidates to complete documentation and initial preparation before basic training.
In parallel, a Digital Recruiting System will centralize applicant management and introduce automation to improve processing speed and consistency.
An updated online application portal will expand the use of digital forms and reduce manual data entry, with the aim of improving applicant tracking and communication.
Training Capacity, Workforce Gaps
Training capacity is being expanded to support higher intake levels, including increased throughput at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and at facilities at CFB Borden, Ontario.
The system is expected to handle around 10,000 training positions.
Despite meeting overall recruitment targets, shortages persist in specific roles.
A financial incentive program introduced last year targets underfilled non-commissioned occupations, with payments linked to training completion and continued service.
Eligibility rules have also been updated, requiring either Canadian citizenship or at least three years of physical residency for permanent residents in most roles.
