US Approves $83M Sale of GMLRS Alternative Warheads to Singapore
The US State Department has cleared a potential foreign military sale of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS)-Alternative Warheads (AW) to Singapore.
The $83.14-million package includes 45 M30A2 GMLRS-AW pods from Lockheed Martin, along with telemetry kits, engineering services, technical assistance, and other related logistics and program support.
According to the notice, the proposed sale will enhance the Southeast Asian country’s capability to deter regional threats, strengthen interoperability with allies, and contribute to regional stability.
GMLRS-AW
The GMLRS-AW can be fired from both the wheeled M142 HIMARS and tracked M270 launchers.
Singapore operates approximately 24 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System launchers, which were scheduled for upgrades “with more capable rockets,” the country’s defense ministry said in March 2025.
Analysts said the enhancements could enable Singapore’s HIMARS to fire longer-range munitions, such as the GMLRS-ER, with a range of up to 150 kilometers (93 miles), or the Precision Strike Missile, which can reach between 400 and 500 kilometers (250 to 310 miles).
Meanwhile, the GMLRS-AW has a range of more than 70 kilometers (43 miles).
The guided rocket carries a 200-pound (90.7-kilogram) class fragmenting warhead that disperses roughly 160,000 preformed tungsten fragments, enabling it to engage wide-area targets such as dismounted troops, light vehicles, and air defense systems while minimizing collateral damage.
