The UK Ministry of Defence has received the first batch of L3Harris T4 multi-mission bomb disposal unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).
They will support explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams in neutralizing bomb threats and be deployed with British Army and Royal Navy units in the UK, Cyprus, and Gibraltar.
The T4 features advanced controls and high-definition cameras, allowing it to lift, reach, and manipulate objects with human-like precision.
The delivery is part of a 32-million-pound ($43 million) contract for a total of 50 T4 UGVs, managed by the DE&S Specialist Vehicles and Uncrewed Land Systems Team in partnership with L3Harris.
T4 Features
L3Harris’ T4 system is a rugged, medium-sized robot designed for high-risk tasks such as bomb disposal and hazardous materials handling.
It can also be used for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear detection.
The platform weighs 154 pounds (70 kilograms), including its batteries, with the manipulator arm adding 72 pounds (33 kilograms).
Equipped with a haptic feedback system, the T4 lets operators “feel” what the robotic arm touches or holds.
The arm mirrors the movements of the user’s hand, enabling precise manipulation of objects while reducing the need for extensive training.
Depending on the task, the robot can operate for more than seven hours, supporting EOD and hazardous materials teams during extended missions.
Its skid-steer track system allows it to reach speeds of over 5 miles (8 kilometers) per hour and is capable of climbing stairs and slopes.
