Lockheed Completes E-2D Hawkeye Radar Upgrade Flight Tests

Lockheed Martin has completed flight testing of a new radar subsystem upgrade for the US Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye.

The company, working with Northrop Grumman, tested the Digital Receiver Exciter Recorder (DREXR) system during recent flights, validating its performance as part of a broader effort to modernize the navy’s airborne early warning fleet. 

The upgrade is designed to improve how the aircraft detects, tracks, and processes threats while supporting carrier strike group operations.

DREXR replaces existing exciter and receiver components with a single-box system that delivers more advanced radar performance and extended service life for the platform.

Engineers tested wideband transmit and receive functions, independent radar element control, and software-defined waveform capability. 

“By modernizing this proven platform, we are ensuring it remains a critical enabler for force protection, command and control, and mission success in today’s increasingly complex threat environment,” Rick Cordaro, vice president of radar and sensor systems at Lockheed Martin, said.

E-2D Hawkeye Modernization 

The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye serves as the US Navy’s airborne early warning and battle management platform, linking air and naval forces into a shared operational picture. 

Recent years have seen a steady stream of upgrades aimed at extending the E-2D’s operational relevance as the US Navy adapts to more complex threats.

In January, the US Navy awarded BAE Systems a $62-million contract to establish a service depot for the E-2D Hawkeye’s Identification Friend or Foe system.

The facility at Fleet Readiness Center Southwest in San Diego will handle testing, diagnostics, and repairs for the AN/APX-122A system, aiming to cut costs, speed up turnaround, and improve readiness.

Earlier, in September 2024, the service granted Fuse Integration a $16-million contract to supply router systems that shift the aircraft’s external networking to software-based connectivity.
