Navantia Positions ALFA 4000 for Sweden’s Luleå Frigate Program

Navantia has confirmed it is offering its ALFA 4000 frigate to Sweden as a low-risk option for the NATO country’s planned four-ship Luleå program, promising delivery of two vessels in 2030 and two in 2031.

The Spanish shipbuilder said the design aligns with Stockholm’s naval requirements and offers rapid operational readiness, while emphasizing long-term industrial cooperation with local partners.

It builds on existing platforms and integrates Swedish systems, drawing on Navantia’s prior collaboration with Saab.

The company described the proposal as “a reliable high-capacity choice … for the long term,” highlighting its ability to deliver on schedule and maintain operational capability throughout the fleet’s service life.

Sweden has yet to announce a final decision on the Luleå program.

The ALFA 4000 Surface Combatant

Navantia designed the ALFA 4000 for air defense, surface warfare, and anti-submarine missions.

It measures 120 meters (394 feet) long, has a beam of 16 meters (52 feet), a landing deck for helicopters the size of NH-90 or SH-60 airframes, a space for rigid-hull inflatable boats, and capacity for approximately 100 sailors.

The platform is armed with air defense missiles, anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, and integrated sonar systems, supported by a fully networked combat management system.

For propulsion, the vessel is equipped with a diesel engine coupled with an electric motor and generator, allowing speeds of over 27 knots (50 kilometers/31 miles per hour) and a range of 4,500 nautical miles (8,334 kilometers/5,179 miles).
