Raytheon Secures $708M StormBreaker Smart Bomb Order From US

The US Department of Defense has awarded Raytheon a $708.9-million contract for the production of small diameter bomb increment II (StormBreaker) systems.

The deal covers test equipment, containers, and spares, on top of all up rounds.

Deliveries will go to South Korea, Italy, Canada, Germany, Norway, Finland, Belgium, and Switzerland.

Work will be conducted at Raytheon’s facility in Tucson, Arizona, with completion expected by March 2030.

Coordination will be handled by the US Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, which oversees the contract.

The contract follows Pentagon approvals in December 2025 for Canada to acquire small-diameter bombs.

In the same year, the US also authorized the sale of the weapon to Poland, Japan, and Romania.

About the Small Diameter Bomb II

Designated GBU-53B StormBreaker, the bomb is an air-to-surface precision weapon using GPS, inertial navigation, and data link communication systems to engage stationary and moving targets.

At 208 pounds (94 kilograms), 69 inches (175 centimeters) long, and up to 7 inches (18 centimeters) in diameter, the bomb allows fighter jets to carry more munitions while reducing collateral damage.

Its range exceeds  40 nautical miles (46 miles/74 kilometers) and it is currently deployed on the F-15E Strike Eagle.

Ongoing projects aim to integrate it into other combat aircraft, such as the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the F-35 Lightning II.
