Swedish Navy Amphibious Units Train Ahead of Sea Giraffe 1X Delivery

Sweden, in cooperation with Saab, has been training the Swedish Navy’s amphibious units ahead of the delivery of Sea Giraffe 1X radars.

Personnel from the receiving units, including operators and technicians, are being prepared to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the system.

Stockholm ordered the naval radars in several different configurations under a contract worth 340 million Swedish kroner ($31 million) announced in December 2024, with the systems set for installation on new combat boats, surface ships, and autonomous vessels.

The units are preliminarily set to receive a training system in autumn 2026, ahead of the planned handover of operational materiel and systems in autumn 2027.

“Our role is to ensure that the training meets the requirements we have set and that it really gives operators and technicians the right knowledge before delivery to be able to use and maintain the system,” said Danish Khan, an Integrated Logistics Support engineer at the Swedish defense procurement agency.

As a 3D active electronically scanned array radar operating in the X-band, the Sea Giraffe 1X can simultaneously conduct air and surface surveillance.

It can also detect small and fast targets, including anti-ship missiles and drones, and is equipped with electronic counter-countermeasure functionality to operate effectively in jammed or contested electromagnetic environments.

Depending on configuration, the system weighs roughly 150 to 350 kilograms (331 to 771 pounds) and can be adapted for integration with different combat management systems.
