Element, Leonardo Team Up for Next-Gen US Navy Electromagnetic Testing

Maryland-based certification specialist Element US Space & Defense has partnered with Leonardo DRS to support electromagnetic testing activities for the US Navy.

The team addresses evaluation requirements to advance systems being developed as part of the force’s medium-voltage capability projects.

Part of the collaboration is the assembly of a semi-anechoic lined electromagnetic interference (EMI) chamber at Leonardo’s Menomonee Falls center in Wisconsin.

EMI chambers recreate real-world conditions in a controlled setting, blocking external noise while containing internal signals. Specialized walls absorbs radio frequencies to prevent reflections, ensuring precise measurements.

The consortium will house the structure in Leonardo’s high-power test laboratory, with oversight backed by the company’s know-how in naval power analysis and Element’s technical support expertise.

According to the companies, the EMI chamber will be fielded as an in-house solution that will help streamline development and shorten delivery timelines.

It is also expected to support future testing needs as defense requirements evolve.

The platform is scheduled to achieve operational capability in 2026.

“This agreement marks a major milestone in our mission to deliver next generation testing solutions to the defense community,” said Dennis Pyatt, CEO and president at Element US Space & Defense.

“By joining forces with Leonardo DRS, we’re not just building an EMI chamber — we’re building the future of electromagnetic compatibility testing for US Navy platforms.”
