Greek Navy to Deploy Camcopter S-100 Drones Aboard New FDI Frigates

The Hellenic Navy has procured ship-based Camcopter S-100 unmanned air systems (UAS) from Schiebel for integration aboard its three newly acquired French-built FDI frigates.

While contractual details have not been disclosed, the first integration is scheduled for spring aboard HS Kimon (F601). The vessel arrived in Greece in January and will undergo incremental capability upgrades through to the Standard 2++ configuration by 2029.

In addition to the shipborne systems, another Camcopter S-100 will be operated from land for training purposes and to enhance operator proficiency. Training for the initial Greek Camcopter S-100 crews is expected to be completed in the spring of 2026.

The remaining S-100 systems will be deployed from the Hellenic Navy’s HS Nearchos and Formion, which are expected to arrive in late 2026 and early 2027, respectively.

“We are extremely proud that the Camcopter S-100 is the UAS of choice for the Hellenic Navy,” Chairman of the Schiebel Group Hans Georg Schiebel said.

“With its proven maritime performance, endurance and payload capacity, the S-100 will provide commanders with extended situational awareness, further enhancing the operational capabilities of the Hellenic Navy’s surface forces.”

The vertical takeoff and landing UAS can operate day and night and in adverse weather conditions, with a data-link range of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles) on land and at sea.

The S-100 navigates autonomously via pre-programmed GPS waypoints or can be flown directly using a pilot control unit.

Equipped with a Wescam MX-10 electro-optical/infrared camera gimbal and an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch sensor, the S-100 will enhance frigate operations across maritime security, search and rescue, exclusive economic zone surveillance, environmental monitoring, and anti-submarine warfare.
