The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has issued an initial procurement call for 120mm tank ammunition from Rheinmetall on behalf of multiple NATO member states.
The deliveries, valued at approximately 200 million euros ($237 million), will be carried out under a framework agreement signed in 2025. The ammunition will be used to replenish stocks of tank rounds employed by main battle tanks across the alliance.
Under the framework — known as the Basic Contractual Instrument (BCI) — participating countries can procure 120mm ammunition through the NSPA.
Rheinmetall said the BCI defines the contractual terms and conditions as well as the full technical specifications for various types of 120mm tank ammunition.
“This significantly simplifies the procurement of 120mm tank ammunition within the Atlantic Alliance,” the German company noted, adding that the agreement allows Rheinmetall to further strengthen its role as a leading supplier of NATO-standard 120mm ammunition.
120mm Ammunition
Rheinmetall’s 120mm smoothbore gun technology, which has been in service with numerous countries since 1980, has become the globally established main tank armament for the armed forces of Germany, NATO, and other allied nations.
It is the standard weapon system on the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams main battle tanks.
Building on its high performance and significant growth potential, Rheinmetall continues to deliver innovative, threat-adapted solutions in the 120mm caliber for the medium term.
The company produces a comprehensive family of 120mm rounds, including armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot ammunition for engaging heavily armored targets, high-explosive multi-purpose rounds for use against infantry, light armor, field fortifications, and structures, as well as training and practice rounds that are ballistically matched to combat ammunition.
