Sweden is moving closer to localizing maintenance for next-generation frigates after Naval Group signed a partnership with Oresund Drydocks AB to establish a domestic support facility.
Under the agreement, Naval Group will work with Oresund Drydocks to provide maintenance and service support for the Defense and Intervention Frigate (FDI) fleet, which could see its first delivery to Sweden by 2030.
The collaboration focuses on through-life support, knowledge transfer, and sustaining fleet readiness while strengthening Sweden’s defense industrial base.
Guillaume Weisrock, Naval Group’s vice president for Sales and Business Development for Europe and North America, emphasized that the partnership is aimed at innovation, high-value job creation, and enhancing strategic sovereignty over the FDI fleet.
Naval Group intends for the partnership to transfer technology and skills to the Swedish maritime sector, reinforcing both operational and industrial resilience.
Naval Group Expands Local Facilities
Over the past two years, Naval Group has actively strengthened its local industrial presence in multiple countries to support frigate programs.
In 2025, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Westcon Naval Shipyard in Norway to foster a Norwegian frigate support ecosystem.
In late 2024, Naval Group further expanded cooperation with Greek industry and the University of Patras, establishing frameworks for research, technology collaboration, and preparation for future frigate sustainment.
Beyond Europe, Naval Group has maintained and developed its local industrial presence in Saudi Arabia through its subsidiary, Naval Group Arabia, based in Riyadh.
This office has supported local cooperation, technology transfer, and fleet sustainment activities aligned with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 defense industrial objectives.
