Germany Buys More 30mm Ammunition for Puma IVFs

Germany has placed a new order with Rheinmetall for 30mm ammunition for Puma infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

The order, valued at several hundred million euros, was made under a framework agreement signed in December 2022 covering 30mm×173 ammunition for the Puma IFV.

The contract, which runs through 2029, has been expanded to include higher delivery volumes and increased overall value.

While part of the ammunition has already been delivered under the updated deal, Rheinmetall is expected to supply several hundred thousand rounds, with the total contract volume estimated at around 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion).

The vehicle is equipped with Rheinmetall’s MK30-2/ABM 30mm cannon, which supports programmable ammunition and has an effective range of more than 2,000 meters (over 6,500 feet).

Rheinmetall’s KE-TF round is designed for engaging soft and semi-hardened targets, including drones.

Puma Fleet

The procurement is part of broader efforts to reinforce Germany’s Puma fleet.

Earlier this month, Berlin awarded a 4.2 billion-euro ($4.9 billion) contract to joint venture partners Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland for the delivery of 200 additional Puma IFVs.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2028, and the contract includes integration of the MELLS anti-tank guided missile system.

Last year, the European nation approved the use of a modular training simulator developed by Rheinmetall for Puma crews.

Known as AGSP, the system is designed to replicate live-fire and combat scenarios.

It includes a command-and-control station and four vehicle cabins configured to reflect the Puma’s internal layout.
