Sweden Orders Ground-Based Air Defense Parts From Saab for $220M
Sweden has ordered new sensors and a command-and-control system from Saab for the army’s brigade-level ground-based air defense.
The 2.1-billion-krona ($220 million) package includes the Giraffe 1X radar and the LSS Lv C2 system, as well as weapon-system integration, studies, and spare parts to support Sweden’s mobile short-range air defense capability.
Additionally, Saab will conduct an integration study to complement the brigade’s air defense system with the company’s AMB radar designed to detect incoming aircraft or drones at medium range.
Deliveries are slated for 2027 to 2028.
“We are very proud to contribute to a strengthened ground-based air defence capability for the Swedish brigades,” Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance, said.
This aligns with Stockholm’s goal of raising defense spending from 2.4 to 3.5 percent of GDP by 2030 amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Core Components
Stockholm has previously ordered the Giraffe 1X 3D radar, which provides 360-degree coverage and can reportedly detect threats as small as a milk carton from up to 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away.
It weighs under 150 kilograms (330 pounds) and is flexible enough to be deployed as a mobile, deployable, or fixed system, detecting a variety of threats, including drones and missiles.
Meanwhile, Saab’s LSS Lv system manages air defense operations by coordinating target engagement, sharing threat information, and supporting planning and assessment.
