China’s Wing Loong X Takes a Traditionally Underwater Mission Into the Air
China is exploring a new angle in anti-submarine warfare with Wing Loong X, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to handle tasks usually carried out below the surface.
The long-endurance drone is being positioned as a platform that could support sub-hunting missions from the sky.
Instead of dipping sonar or trailing sensors underwater, Wing Loong X deploys small floating devices that gather acoustic data and send it back to the drone.
