SAIC Lands $1.4B Contract to Accelerate US Military Innovation
Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) has secured a $1.4-billion task order to rapidly deliver advanced warfighting capabilities through the COBRA program, aiming to speed innovations from concept to combat across multiple domains.
COBRA, which stands for Collaborative Operations for Battlespace Resilient Architecture, is a US Department of Defense initiative designed to integrate command and control systems with new and existing platforms.
The program allows combatant commands, such as the Indo-Pacific Command, to quickly field innovative solutions, test them in exercises, and refine them for operational deployment.
SAIC will apply digital engineering, rapid prototyping, and data analytics across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains to enhance readiness, decision-making, and lethality.
The task order, spanning five years starting late 2025, emphasizes open “plug and play” architectures, allowing the military to modernize systems without vendor lock-in and adapt quickly to emerging threats.
Other Efforts to Accelerate Innovation
COBRA is part of a broader push by the US military to speed innovation and reduce the timeline from concept to operational capability.
Programs like the Army Futures Command’s Rapid Capabilities Office, the air force’s AFWERX innovation hub, and the navy’s Task Force Innovation are all designed to experiment with emerging technologies in real-world scenarios.
AFWERX, for example, has accelerated the fielding of autonomous systems, AI-enabled targeting tools, and resilient communications networks, often taking concepts from idea to prototype within months.
