Boeing Receives Australia’s P-8A Poseidon Anti-Sub Aircraft for Major Upgrades

Boeing has received the first Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-8A Poseidon aircraft for Increment 3 Block 2 upgrades.

The work, to be carried out at Boeing’s Jacksonville, Florida, facility will enhance the aircraft’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, as well as its effectiveness in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare missions.

The upgrade package includes new antennas, sensors, and software enhancements designed to improve computing power and communication systems.

Majority Work in Australia

Australia is the first international P-8A customer to receive the Increment 3 modifications.

In 2024, Boeing was awarded a 139.5-million Australian dollar ($90.5 million) contract to carry out the upgrades, with the first two aircraft undergoing modification in Jacksonville and the remainder to be upgraded by Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) at its Deeper Maintenance & Modification Facility in South Australia.

More than 30 aircraft maintenance engineer apprentices and trainees have already joined BDA to prepare for the upcoming upgrade work, with a further 30 jobs expected to be created as the program progresses.

Thirteenth Aircraft Delivered

Meanwhile, in a further boost to Australia’s P-8A fleet, the 13th aircraft was delivered on September 29, with the last of 14 aircraft expected to arrive in 2026.

“These upgrades, together with the delivery of the 13th P-8A, mark two important advancements for Australia’s defence of its vast coastline,” director of Boeing Defence Australia Sustainment Operations Naomi Smith said.

“Increment 3 Block 2 will deliver next‑generation detection and targeting for aircrews, while the newest aircraft strengthens fleet readiness and operational reach, all while maintaining interoperability with the US Navy P-8A fleet.”
