UK Opens New Defense Storage Facility in Cumbria

The UK has opened a new defense storage facility in Cumbria to improve its forces’ ability to store, manage, and deliver mission-critical equipment to operational units.

The 19-acre (7.6-hectare) Longtown facility will serve as a central hub for the secure storage of items such as body armor, spare parts, and general munitions.

It sits alongside the existing munitions facility in the area, which already employs over 60 people and provides munitions storage for the armed forces.

Built by McLaughlin & Harvey, the project employed 450 workers during construction and will sustain 25 permanent jobs in the area.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard said the facility represents a significant step in modernizing the UK’s defense logistics network while contributing to local economic growth.

The building integrates modern security systems, automated storage technologies, and green energy measures such as energy-efficient lighting, climate control systems, and rainwater recycling. It also includes a dedicated nature reserve, aligning with the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) sustainability goals.

Other Major UK Defence Infrastructure Upgrades

The opening is part of a wider UK effort to modernize defense logistics and supply infrastructure.

London has invested in expanding the defense fulfillment centers in Donnington, Shropshire, and Bicester, Oxfordshire, which serve as primary storage and distribution hubs for equipment used by all three services.

The defense ministry also announced in May 2025 the completion of its military storage hub in Longtown just south of the Scottish border.

The new storage network supports the UK’s broader plan to raise defense spending to 2.6 percent of GDP by 2027 and eventually to three percent as part of an effort to strengthen warfighting readiness while creating skilled jobs across regions.
