Sweden has awarded Saab a 4-billion krona ($360-million) contract to extend maintenance and support of its Gripen C/D and Gripen E fighter jets.
The deal builds on an initial 2020 contract, which established a multiyear framework for Gripen maintenance, system upgrades, and logistical support.
Under the expanded agreement, Saab will provide system support, spare parts, component repair, and pilot and technician training from 2026 to 2027, with options to continue the work through 2029.
It also includes ongoing software maintenance and mission system updates to keep the aircraft aligned with evolving operational requirements.
Saab said the extension will help sustain the current Gripen C/D fleet while preparing for the full-scale introduction of the newer Gripen E.
The contract was signed with the country’s defense procurement agency and ensures continued upgrades to Sweden’s air fleet while keeping most of the work domestic, supporting local jobs in avionics, logistics, and systems integration.
Sweden Expands Air Force Modernization
The renewed support deal is one of several efforts by Sweden to strengthen its air capabilities amid heightened security demands in Northern Europe.
Stockholm has previously initiated upgrades to older Gripen C/D aircraft, adding new mission systems, electronic warfare enhancements, and updated ground support equipment to extend their operational life.
Meanwhile, the Gripen E program continues to advance, with Saab ramping up production and preparing deliveries to Sweden and export customers such as Brazil.
The Swedish Air Force is also expanding base infrastructure and dispersal capability, including the use of road bases for rapid redeployment during crises.
