Sweden Contracts Marine Alutech for 20 Amphibious Battalion Boats

Sweden has contracted Finnish boat builder Marine Alutech for the delivery of 20 watercraft to equip the country’s amphibious battalions, replacing vessels previously transferred to Ukraine.

The 130-million Swedish krona ($14-million) contract will see the newer Watercat M9 variant replace the aging Watercat M8, ensuring the battalions maintain operational capability.

Deliveries will run through 2028, beginning with a pre-series boat, followed by the remaining vessels.

“It is mainly about the fact that we have taken measures to improve maritime safety and made adjustments to the needs of the new amphibious battalions,” project manager for Swedish Defence Materiel Administration’s marine operations area, Agnes Moberg, said.

The contract follows Stockholm’s July order of 22 additional Combat Boat 90 (CB90) Next Generation vessels from Saab, valued at 900 million kronor ($94 million).

Improved Vessel

The boats will be used to transport personnel and equipment to, between, and within the amphibious battalions’ operational and base areas.

Featuring improved capabilities over the previous variant, the M9 can carry up to eight personnel plus two crew members or transport smaller cargo loads.

The vessel’s low draft — approximately 40 centimeters (15.7 inches) — enables operations in shallow waters less than 1 meter (3.3 feet) deep, both in rivers and along coastal beaches.

A diesel-powered water jet propels the craft, giving it a service speed of over 30 knots (34.5 miles/55.5 kilometers per hour) at full load.
