Sweden’s Saab, Poland’s WB Group Team Up on Drones, Naval, Border Tech

Swedish defense firm Saab and Poland’s WB Group have established a strategic cooperation to assess joint projects in drones, naval platforms, and border protection technologies.

The deal was signed during the MSPO defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland.

The initiative “marks another significant step in Saab’s commitment to advancing strategic defense capabilities between Poland and Sweden,” stated Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.

“Partnering with WB Group enables us to share expertise and scale up innovation to deliver cutting-edge solutions for national security,” added Johansson.

WB Group Contracts

Poland’s WB Group has emerged as a key player in Warsaw’s push to expand its defense capabilities.

In May, the company secured a contract to supply 10,000 Warmate loitering munitions, with deliveries of 1,000 per batch scheduled through 2035.

The initiative will support both dismounted units and vehicle-mounted forces, designed to strike armored vehicles and infantry.

In April, WB Electronics, part of WB Group, signed a joint venture with South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace to produce missiles for the Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers in Poland.

Last year, the Polish firm closed a 13.5-million-euro ($14 million) deal to provide seven FlyEye reconnaissance drone systems, each comprising four drones and a ground station.

Boosting Defense

Amid rising security concerns from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war near its border, Poland is accelerating its military modernization, allocating billions for new weapons.

Earlier this year, the country announced plans to increase defense spending to 4.8 percent of GDP next year, moving closer to NATO’s new 5 percent target and more than doubling the alliance’s previous 2 percent benchmark.
