Rheinmetall to Maintain Czech Armored Vehicles Under $292M Deal
The Czech Republic has signed a seven-year contract with Rheinmetall to provide support services for 42 Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks and two Bergepanzer 3 Büffel armored recovery vehicles.
Valued at up to 250 million euros ($292 million), the agreement covers the supply of spare parts, factory and field repairs, follow-up maintenance, and customer service support.
It also includes training for personnel, technical and logistical assistance, provision of interim infrastructure, and full project management.
Under the agreement, Rheinmetall plans to work closely with the Czech industry, awarding subcontracts to support repair and maintenance operations and ensure the transfer of technical know-how.
The Systems
The Leopard 2A4 was upgraded based on combat experience in the Balkans and Afghanistan, with enhanced protection against mines, improvised explosive devices, and anti-tank weapons.
It is 11 meters (36 feet) long and weighs approximately 62,000 kilograms (136,686 pounds).
It can reach speeds of over 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour and travel up to 450 kilometers (280 miles).
Its armament includes an L44 120 mm smoothbore gun and a 7.62mm machine gun.
The Bergepanzer 3 Büffel is an armored recovery vehicle built on the Leopard 2 chassis.
It supports mechanized units by recovering damaged vehicles, transporting them from the battlefield, assisting in water crossings, and providing tools and spare parts for repairs.
There are over 200 Rheinmetall Büffel vehicles in service across 12 nations.
Rising Defense Spending
European nations are poised to increase defense spending amid growing concerns about a potential Russian threat.
In March, Prague approved a plan to increase its defense budget to 3 percent of GDP by 2030, starting with an annual 0.2 percent rise from 2026.
The funding will support upgrades to land forces, air and missile defenses, command-and-control systems, and logistics.
