Lockheed Boosts Partnership With Philippines on F-16 Block 70 Program

Lockheed Martin is expanding its industrial collaboration with the Philippines as part of its F-16 Block 70 proposal for the country’s Multi-Role Fighter program.

Working with Southern Methodist University, including its Center for Digital and Human-Augmented Manufacturing and Deason Innovation Gym, Lockheed will enhance the Philippines’ capabilities in digital modeling and simulations.

The partnership also covers virtual and augmented reality, robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence.

In addition, the initiative will fund business incubation, government projects, and academic programs, and establish a research lab and training facility to develop new technologies and intellectual property.

“These projects will significantly boost the Philippines’ academia and industry, enabling them to leverage digital innovation technologies to drive economic growth and global industrial competitiveness,” said Dr. Ben Zoghi, Southern Methodist University Associate Dean for Advanced Studies and Industry Partnerships.

F-16 Block 70

As the latest and most advanced version of the F-16, the Block 70 features upgraded systems, improved performance, and enhanced mission capabilities compared to earlier models.

The aircraft’s Northrop Grumman APG-83 AESA radar provides detailed target information and digital map displays that can be adjusted with slew and zoom functions.

It features a high-resolution Center Pedestal Display for tactical imagery, air-to-air displays, and digital flight data.

The jet is equipped with the Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod, providing high-resolution imagery and laser targeting capabilities for both ground and air threats.

Equipped with the Legion-ES IRST system, the Block 70 uses a passive sensor to detect and track airborne targets, enhancing pilot awareness and survivability.

It has an extended structural life of 12,000 hours, which is over 50 percent longer than that of previous F-16s.

Moreover, it features conformal fuel tanks and an upgraded engine, providing increased range without compromising aerodynamics.
