Indonesia Expands Cybersecurity Ties With Singapore Military
Indonesia and Singapore have discussed defense cooperation with a focus on cybersecurity as Jakarta seeks to draw on Singapore’s experience in developing military cyber capabilities.
Indonesian authorities emphasized that Singapore’s cyber force has transitioned from a new initiative to a fully integrated branch alongside the army, navy, and air force.
Brigadier General Frega Wenas Inkiriwang, head of the Information Bureau at Indonesia’s Defense Ministry, stated that cybersecurity is a strategic national security issue, not limited to fraud or scams, Indonesian media reported.
The cooperation plan with Singapore will be further developed through ongoing discussions involving both the Indonesian National Armed Forces and specialized cyber units.
Boosting Cyber Defense
Both Asian nations are intensifying cybersecurity efforts as digital threats escalate and regional tensions grow.
The recent talks came shortly after Singapore’s military deployed units earlier this month to respond to a cyberattack on critical infrastructure, which the defense minister attributed to a hacking group linked to Chinese espionage.
This response reflects Singapore’s investment in cybersecurity through its dedicated cyber branch, officially formed in 2022.
Meanwhile, following major ransomware attacks that disrupted critical government services in Jakarta, Indonesia has also accelerated efforts to modernize its cyber defense.
In February, the military announced plans to expand training and recruitment, including advanced cybersecurity courses for current personnel, as well as increased enlistment of civilian cyber specialists to strengthen its presence in the cyber domain.
The Indonesian National Armed Forces established an independent cyber unit last year, recruiting civilian IT experts and hackers to bolster its digital capabilities.
Comprising civilian IT experts and hackers recruited for their technical skills, the unit operates independently from the armed forces’ main branches and follows a separate structure and recruitment process.
