Ultra Maritime has opened an expanded facility in Wake Forest, North Carolina, to increase production of next-generation radar systems for US Navy surface ships.
The site supports engineering and manufacturing of the Sea Raider family of software-defined radars and the navy’s Next Generation Surface Search Radar (NGSSR), which is intended to replace five legacy radar systems with a single multi-mission capability deployed across surface combatants.
NGSSR is designed to support navigation in congested waters, detect periscopes linked to submarine threats, and track low-flying aerial targets in complex maritime environments.
The Wake Forest facility also functions as a production hub for advanced maritime sensing technologies used in naval modernization programs.
Expanding Manufacturing Capacity
The expansion is part of a broader wave of US defense industrial growth focused on radar, sensing, and maritime surveillance systems.
In March, advanced manufacturing firm Hadrian opened a large facility in Cherokee, Alabama to produce components for Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.
The same month, the US Army began construction of a Military Systems Electromagnetic Test Support facility in Alabama, designed to become the service’s largest anechoic chamber for precision testing in interference-free conditions.
In February, Avio announced plans to build a $500-million facility in southern Virginia to manufacture solid rocket motors for defense, tactical missiles, and commercial space applications.
