Indra, IDV Sign Deal for 34 Amphibious Combat Vehicles for Spanish Marines

Spanish defense firm Indra has signed an agreement with Italian vehicle manufacturer IDV to act as the lead integrator for the supply of 34 new amphibious combat vehicles to the Spanish Marine Infantry.

The delivery details of the contract have not been disclosed. However, the Spanish Ministry of Defense has allocated 374 million euros ($441 million) for the program, according to InfoDefensa.

IDV will serve as the design authority and provide the chassis based on its SuperAV 8×8 platform, while Indra will be responsible for integrating mission systems, including command and control, situational awareness, and the weapon station. Integration will take place at Indra’s Gijón plant and at a new facility whose location has yet to be decided.

The contract includes the delivery of 28 troop transport vehicles, two command post vehicles, two recovery vehicles, and two ambulances, according to InfoDefensa. Indra will also be responsible for designing the last three variants, which will be entirely Spanish.

“The collaboration with IDV will constitute a decisive step within the project to equip the Spanish Marine Infantry with the capabilities required by today’s demanding scenarios, and the beginning of a stable, long-term industrial relationship,” Chief Product Officer and Managing Director of Indra Land Vehicles Frank Torres stated.

Proven Platform

IDV supplies the SuperAV in partnership with BAE Systems to the US Marine Corps, where the platform is known as the Amphibious Combat Vehicle.

IDV partnered with BAE Systems in 2011 to offer the vehicle to the US Marine Corps, with a contract awarded in 2018. Initial deliveries began in late 2020, as the platform started replacing the Vietnam War-era Amphibious Assault Vehicle.

The vehicle also serves as the basis for the Italian Navy Marine Brigade’s Veicolo Blindato Anfibio.

In Spain, it is designated the Marine Infantry Amphibious Combat Vehicle.

“The Superav 8×8 has already been selected by the US Marine Corps and by the Italian Armed Forces,” Head of Sales of IDV, Nazario Bianchini, stated.

“Thanks to the contract signed with Indra, IDV will deliver the state-of-the-art amphibious armoured platform, enabling Spain to renew and expand its National Defence vehicle fleet and effectively address current and future operational challenges.”
