Morocco Eyes US Army’s HADES System as Next Spy Plane

Morocco is assessing a potential acquisition of the US Army’s High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System (HADES) as part of its effort to expand its intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

The move reflects Rabat’s push to address gaps in high-altitude, long-endurance observation solutions, including a dedicated aircraft for signals and electronic intelligence missions.

Currently, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces employs the Dassault Falcon 20 as its ISR platform, which, according to local media, offers limited reach and capability.

The strategy builds on earlier plans to convert Gulfstream G550 business jets into airborne monitoring assets, though that project was ultimately not carried forward.

‘Profound Transformation’

Morocco’s interest in HADES reflects its commitment to leveraging a more integrated intelligence architecture rather than relying on standalone platforms, sources reported.

The spy plane is poised to improve monitoring across key regions, including the Sahara and Sahel.

It would also support tracking of cross-border threats and maritime activity, particularly across the Atlantic and Mediterranean corridors.

Additionally, a potential deal could reinforce interoperability with US forces and expand Morocco’s access to a wider defense technology ecosystem.

Strategic and security affairs analyst Hichem Moatadhid described the country’s move toward information-driven operations under a broader “profound transformation in military doctrine.”

“Possessing high-altitude, long-range reconnaissance platforms effectively shifts the centre of gravity from firepower to anticipation,” The Arab Weekly quoted Moatadhid as saying.

At present, Washington has not yet announced HADES-related foreign military sales with Rabat.
