The Austrian Armed Forces will deploy its first domestically developed satellite, BEACONSAT, in early 2027.
The satellite aims to help detect signal jammers and secure navigation for troops across land, sea, and air. It is developed in collaboration with domestic space company Gate Space.
BEACONSAT will collect critical electronic data to identify jamming threats in operational theaters, according to Austria Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.
“Through jamming methods, troops face the risk of disorientation in the worst case when they rely on satellite-based navigation for movement on land, water, or in the air and this is disrupted,” she said.
Developing Europe’s Military Satellites
Several European countries have advanced their military satellite capabilities in recent years.
The Netherlands selected ICEYE in June 2025 to provide its first operational intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance satellite system, giving its armed forces a space-based reconnaissance edge.
By October 2025, Spain completed the launch of its largest military communications satellite, SpainSat NG‑II, providing secure, high-bandwidth communications for defense operations.
Germany’s Rheinmetall partnered with ICEYE a month later to launch a joint Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite venture, expanding space-based reconnaissance capabilities for European defense.
In December, Portugal also moved to acquire its first SAR satellite, strengthening its national intelligence and surveillance capacity.
