Denmark Orders Rheinmetall Ammunition to Support Mobile Air Defense, CV90 Fleets

The Danish government has commissioned Rheinmetall to supply ammunition supporting a range of platforms, including infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and self-propelled air defense systems.

Valued at several hundred million euros, the seven-year framework contract also covers 120mm rounds for main battle tanks and 155mm artillery ammunition.

Initial orders in the medium-caliber segment comprise various 30×173mm and 35×228mm cartridges.

These orders total high five-digit quantities and are valued in the low three-digit million-euro range.

Air Defense Ammunition

The procurement of 30×173mm ammunition reflects Copenhagen’s effort to strengthen its mobile short-range air defense capability following the procurement of Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 system in 2024.

The system integrates a 30mm cannon, missiles, and sensors on a single platform, employing programmable airburst rounds to defeat drones and other small, fast aerial targets.

Meanwhile, the 35×228mm cartridges will support Denmark’s CV9035 family of IFVs, which are armed with the Bushmaster III 35mm cannon.

The Scandinavian country recently placed an order for 44 additional CV90 vehicles from BAE Systems, building on a 2024 order for 115 units.

For tank ammunition, Rheinmetall will deliver more than 1,000 rounds of 120mm kinetic-energy munitions, with an order value in the high single-digit million-euro range.

“We are grateful for the trust Denmark has placed in us for its ammunition supply,” CEO of Rheinmetall AG Armin Papperger said.

“Rheinmetall sees this as confirmation of its role as one of the world’s leading ammunition manufacturers.”
