BlackSky Signs Multiple Contracts for Gen-3 Satellite Program

BlackSky Technology has secured several new contracts to expand the deployment of its Gen-3 satellite capabilities, as early access pilot programs transition into renewal agreements.

According to the company, interest from defense customers in the Americas, Asia, and Europe is rising, reflecting broader investment trends in space-based intelligence systems.

BlackSky emphasized that this growth is driven by the need for time-sensitive imagery and analytics that can be integrated into national defense workflows and command-and-control systems to support faster decision-making.

Gen-3 supports tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance by providing real-time, AI-enabled detection and classification of tactical targets, including vessels and aircraft.

Moreover, the system enables persistent monitoring of patterns of activity over borders and maritime zones.

The satellite provides 35 centimeters (13,8 inches) of resolution imagery, multiple daily revisits over key areas, and can deliver data in as little as 60 minutes after collection.

Customers can access Gen-3 data through subscription models that provide guaranteed tasking and priority access to specific areas of interest.

Accelerating Deployment

The new contracts follow BlackSky’s accelerated satellite deployment schedule.

The company brought its third Gen-3 satellite into commercial service last month, just three weeks after launch, continuing a trend of faster commissioning compared with earlier satellites.

The latest unit, along with the previous satellite launched in June 2025, captured first imagery within approximately 12 hours, while the first Gen-3 satellite launched earlier last year delivered initial imagery five days after launch.
