Lithuania Receives Next-Generation Carl-Gustaf Grenade Launchers

Lithuania has accepted new Carl-Gustaf multi-purpose grenade launchers as part of a contract signed in late 2024 to reinforce the NATO country’s infantry firepower.

The 14-million-euro ($16.4 million) deal covers the acquisition of the latest-generation Carl-Gustaf M4 RD systems along with a logistics support package.

Vilnius said the deliveries have already replenished its armed forces’ stockpile. However, the government previously confirmed that shipments of the launchers will continue through 2026.

The Baltic state did not disclose the project’s exact quantity during the initiative’s initial announcement.

The Carl-Gustaf, developed by Swedish company Saab, is an 84-millimeter reusable launcher that enhances unit effectiveness across a wide range of combat scenarios, including anti-armor missions and close support for maneuvering forces.

Its M4 RD variant, introduced in 2014, has a compact structure to improve mobility and ease of use for dismounted troops.

Weighing 7 kilograms (15 pounds) and measuring 950 millimeters (37 inches) in length, the weapon can be operated by a single soldier or a two-person team for optimal performance.

The recoilless system can fire up to 6 rounds per minute and penetrate up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) of protective materials.

It has a range of 350 to 2,500 meters (1,148 to 8,202 feet), depending on the type of ammunition, integrations, and target, including moving vehicles.

The Carl-Gustaf family is currently in service with more than 40 countries worldwide.
