The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Serco a contract to provide maintenance and logistics support for EJ200 engines used on the Royal Air Force (RAF)’s Typhoon aircraft.
The five-year agreement is valued at 7.8 million pounds ($10 million).
It establishes a direct service arrangement between Serco and the RAF, whereas similar services were previously subcontracted through Rolls-Royce.
Maintenance operations will continue at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, England, and RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, supporting 26 technical and logistics positions.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a multirole fighter jet featuring twin engines and a canard-delta wing design, jointly developed by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.
It has been in service with the RAF since 2003, supporting a wide range of missions including air defense, air policing, and rapid response operations under the UK’s Quick Reaction Alert fleet.
“This contract will support operational readiness of our Typhoon fleet, ensuring our Royal Air Force continues to have the reliable, mission-essential engine support needed to defend UK airspace and fulfil our NATO commitments,” stated Sid Hallam, DE&S EJ200 Operations Manager.
EJ200 Engines
The Eurofighter Typhoon is powered by two EJ200 engines, each producing 90 kilonewtons (20,232 pounds) of thrust, for a combined thrust of 180 kilonewtons (40,464 pounds).
The engines are designed to be lightweight while withstanding high temperatures and mechanical stresses, which allows the Typhoon to sustain supersonic cruise speeds without using afterburners for extended periods.
Incorporating advanced integrated health monitoring, the EJ200 engines can operate for up to 1,200 flying hours before requiring unscheduled maintenance.
