Sweden Orders Four C-390 Millennium Aircraft From Embraer

Sweden has acquired four C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer.

With this purchase, Stockholm joins a strategic NATO partnership with Austria and the Netherlands, which together ordered nine C-390s in 2024.

The cooperation emphasizes joint procurement, interoperability, and long-term collaboration around the C-390 platform.

Sweden will also gain access to training programs and lifecycle support for the aircraft.

The contract includes seven additional purchase options for potential future orders by other European nations.

“This acquisition marks a major milestone in the modernization and strengthening of the Swedish Air Force,” said Pål Jonson, Minister for Defence of Sweden.

“With the C-390 Millennium, I am convinced we will increase our operational efficiency while enhancing interoperability with our European partners,” added the minister.

The latest order builds on an earlier 2025 contract in which Sweden requested four C-390s for rapid troop and equipment movement in domestic and international operations.

The C-390 entered service with Hungary in 2024 and Portugal in 2023, following its initial operations in Brazil in 2019.

Current fleets report a mission capability rate of 93 percent and mission completion rates above 99 percent, according to Embraer.

The aircraft can carry up to 26 tons of payload and reach a top speed of 470 knots (870 kilometers/540 miles per hour).

Its versatility supports troop and cargo transport, airdrops, medical evacuations, search and rescue, firefighting, and humanitarian missions.

The C-390 can operate from temporary or unpaved runways, including packed earth, soil, or gravel.

In its KC-390 configuration, the aircraft can perform air-to-air refueling, either supplying fuel to other aircraft or receiving it via underwing pods.
