DLA Merger Creates One-Stop Command for Weapons Parts

The US Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has established a new command to oversee the supply of spare and repair parts essential to maintaining military weapons systems.

The new unit, called DLA Weapons Support, combines DLA Aviation in Richmond, Virginia, and DLA Land and Maritime in Columbus, Ohio, into one organization overseeing Class IX supplies, or parts and components that keep aircraft, vehicles, and other equipment ready for use.

Both legacy facilities will stay open, though signs and organizational names will be updated to match the new structure.

The Weapons Support’s leadership will be shared during a one-year transition period, with regular updates relayed to employees and customers as the shift moves forward.

Rear Adm. Julie Treanor, who led DLA Land and Maritime, and Brig. Gen. Patrick Launey, who managed DLA Aviation, will guide the new command together.

According to the agency, merging the commands will sharpen how DLA responds to the needs of the armed forces, especially in today’s fast-changing security environment.

Launey added that the reorganization is a chance to rethink how the agency is structured and how it communicates with suppliers and its workforce.

Maintaining Adaptive Support

US Army Lt. Gen. Mark Simerly, DLA’s director, said the decision to unify the two offices under one command will help standardize processes, set clear priorities, and make the agency more efficient in delivering parts across the board.

He pointed out that this critical move reflects DLA’s long history of adapting to the demands of warfighters.

“We have expanded, and we have contracted over time as we responded to warfighter requirements — constantly changing to meet the needs of those who depend on us,” Simerly commented.
