Northrop to Produce Vehicle‑Launched Volcano Mine Dispensers for US Army

The US Army has contracted Northrop Grumman to produce M136 vehicle-launched anti-tank scatterable ammunition canisters.

The $18.8-million contract will be financed through fiscal 2024 Building Partner Capacity funds, with an estimated completion date of September 26, 2027.

This reflects a renewed US Army effort to strengthen mine-laying capabilities, seen as a key deterrent against near-peer adversaries in future conflicts.

Known as Volcano, the system was last used extensively during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but has remained largely dormant in the years since.

In 2020, the US Army launched a service life extension program for Volcano, adding 15 to 20 years to its operational lifespan and signaling renewed focus on scatterable mine capabilities.

The versatile system can be mounted on a helicopter or ground vehicle, enabling rapid barrier creation to protect assets and personnel while also shaping the battlefield.

In modern warfare, terrain-shaping refers to denying the enemy access to key areas and restricting freedom of maneuver through the use of systems and munitions.

The system’s four launcher racks can emplace a wide area with both anti‑personnel and anti‑tank mines in as little as 20 seconds from the air, requiring minimal personnel.

After dispersal, the mines self-orient and arm within seconds. Each munition contains an embedded self‑destruct timer and safety features designed to limit long‑term hazards.

It is compatible with a wide range of platforms, including Humvees, Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, and Black Hawk helicopters, and has been sold to Taiwan and Ukraine.
