German Army to Expand Digital Command With SitaWare Edge
German soldiers will soon field new situational awareness software after Danish company Systematic signed a contract to supply the Bundeswehr with SitaWare Edge.
The system is aimed at dismounted troops who operate in fast-moving and often disconnected environments. It delivers planning tools directly to a soldier’s mobile device or tablet and is designed to be intuitive by requiring minimal training.
The software combines mapping, force tracking, chat, and mission planning in a single interface and can integrate with third-party applications. This setup allows frontline commanders to share intelligence, monitor unit positions, and coordinate operations in real time to help bridge the gap between soldiers on the ground and higher command structures.
SitaWare Edge supports secure communications even when networks are limited or unavailable since it mostly relies on tactical radios, satellites, or other low-bandwidth channels.
The deal also includes a development package that allows the Bundeswehr to customize the system and add features or integrations to meet specific operational needs.
“The introduction of SitaWare Edge is another important step, delivering our software capabilities to the very frontline,” Systematic Germany’s Managing Director Sven Trusch said.
Part of German Armed Forces’ Modernization
The agreement is part of Germany’s Mission Enabling Service, a broader initiative aimed at modernizing the armed forces’ digital command and control capabilities across land, sea, and air operations.
The modernization also seeks to create a unified information network that allows rapid, reliable communication and situational awareness from headquarters down to individual soldiers in the field.
The effort also aligns with broader NATO trends emphasizing networked forces and enhanced interoperability, as outlined in the Digital Transformation Vision agreed upon in 2022. By equipping its forces with modern C2 systems, Germany aims to strengthen its operational agility and integrate more seamlessly with allied forces during joint missions.
Systematic’s products are already widely used within the Bundeswehr’s digital modernization efforts. In 2023, the cooperation was formalized through a seven-year maintenance agreement to ensure continued updates, support, and integration of the SitaWare suite across multiple platforms.
“The Bundeswehr already has experience with SitaWare, and their decision to expand its use even further reflects the trust we have built through our cooperation,” Trusch said.
