BDT UK Showcases Next-Gen Beretta, Sako Rifles to Succeed British Military’s L85

BDT UK has unveiled the Beretta New Assault Rifle Platform and a Sako AR-15-style system as part of its bid to replace the British Armed Forces’ standard-issue assault rifle.

The effort falls under Project Grayburn, a program to define requirements for a next-generation rifle to succeed the SA80 L85 in service since the 1980s. The weapon is set to be phased out by 2030.

The L85 will remain in service during the transition, with procurement for up to 172,000 new rifles expected in phases over the next decade, according to Forces News.

Ambidextrous, Lighter, NATO-Compatible

BDT UK’s offerings are fully ambidextrous and weigh less than the L85. Depending on the setup, each would weigh approximately 3 kilograms (7 pounds).

The package includes Steiner’s M8Xi dual focal plane scope, which features an up to 8x zoom and a built-in red dot for quick targeting at close range.

The optic weighs 650 to 700 grams (1.4 to 1.5 pounds) and measures 260 millimeters (10 inches) in length, with reticles customizable based on operational requirements.

Compared to the L85, which has its magazine behind the trigger, both the Beretta and Sako firearms adopt the more conventional AR-15 configuration, a design now favored and in service across NATO forces, BDT UK highlighted.

Eyeing Local Production Boost

As part of its bid for the Project Grayburn initiative, BDT UK plans to expand its manufacturing footprint in the country.

The company currently operates a facility in Lincolnshire and plans to develop it into a dedicated small arms hub if its proposal is selected.

BDT UK has already prepared an agreement to expand the site, supporting the Ministry of Defence’s push for greater sovereign defense capability and a stronger domestic arms industry.
