Morocco Contracts L3Harris for C-130 Modernization

L3Harris Technologies has secured a contract to upgrade several C-130 aircraft for the Royal Moroccan Air Force.

The work will include avionics updates, depot-level maintenance, engine overhauls, and other support tasks.

The upgrades will enhance the Royal Moroccan Air Force’s operational readiness, improving aircraft availability for missions such as tactical airlift, humanitarian aid, and special operations.

Modifications will begin this year at L3Harris’ Waco, Texas, facility and are expected to continue through 2029.

“This landmark agreement marks the beginning of a strategic, long-term partnership with the Royal Moroccan Air Force to ensure their fleet is ready for any mission,” said Jason Lambert, President of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance at L3Harris.

“By leveraging our team’s proven avionics expertise, we will deliver scalable modifications to enhance C-130 performance and fleet longevity,” added Lambert.

The C-130 is designed to operate from unprepared runways, including dirt strips.

Featuring a modular design, it allows for several mission-specific configurations, including personnel movement, evacuations, and vehicle transport.

The aircraft can transport utility helicopters and six-wheeled armored vehicles.

Supporting airdrop operations, it can carry various cargo using its rear loading ramp and door.

It can airdrop loads up to 42,000 pounds (19,000 kilograms) and is equipped with high-flotation landing gear for operations on rough terrain.

Latest Acquisitions

Morocco is continuing to expand and modernize its military through a series of recent acquisitions.

In April, the US approved a potential $825-million deal to supply the North African country with up to 600 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and associated equipment.

The previous month, Rabat secured Chinese-made TB-001K “Scorpion” drones, designed for both reconnaissance and strike missions.

In February, Morocco received its first delivery of Bayraktar Akinci drones from Turkey, following an agreement signed in 2023.
